The Gourd Pot.

So... I wrote a few weeks ago about the pumpkins that were not!...they were gourds...and very nice ones too.
...daughter, from down south, took quite a few home...
... and the lovely pottery class people took some more.
But I still have a basketful of them....though what to do  except gaze appreciately at them.....
....I'm sure I don't know!

Anyway, the Potter  always gives me a ceramic christmas goody and ...so this year the theme was not the pumpkin...

which it has been in the past...

...no, no, it's the gourd!

I'm looking forward to filling it with sunflowers later in the year.

The Pumpkin Party.

It's sort of an annual affair here at The Potters House.
Not really Halloween...nor 5th November...and all that.

It's The Pumpkin Party.

It starts with the pumpkins....normally grown by the potter...
...but this year...failure....bah!...

Never mind ...we bought one each for the grandgirls and as they were all together this week...
...let the carving begin.

It's hard for the grown-ups to stay out of this ...we want to get involved...always!

"Just look what a big head I have"

"That's nothing ...look at mine!"

Serious stuff this...seeds in one bowl and flesh in the other.

Seeds in the oven with olive oil and sea salt...
and the flesh for a pumpkin pie!

 Lanterns glowing...

...bonfire crackling...care of the potter...

...old friends from Marseille join us...

...fireworks sparkling...

...then let the fun begin...

"Nevie-pie cakes"...has a go for a swinging dohnut!!

...a grandgirl takes it all in her stride...

...I can't let myself down...gotcha!!

Monday, October 8

what are these?

We always try to have some pumpkins grown for the five grand girls.

This however is a pic from a couple of years ago!

We planted ...yes...well we thought that we had planted pumpkins...

so when the potter went looking for them ...as the time is drawing nigh for pumpkin celebrations!...

... looky look!!...ornamental gourds...well would you believe it...must have bought the wrong packet of seeds.
Still I have wanted a basket of these again for a while...
...I grew them a few years ago and then didn't seem to get them to germinate...weather too cold...weather too wet...weather too dry...you know the usual gardeners' reasoning!

...lots and lots of gourds...

Sadly ...no "turk's caps"...maybe the weather is to blame for that!

The French Cook Book

This is my much used and much loved recipe book of Provencal goodies.
Well you can see how loved it is!
What shall I do when it falls apart completely?

Yes, yes it has a hole in the back, but fortunately it hasn't got to the words.
We all love it and it gets passed around when special recipes are needed....such as those this week!

We grew pumpkins again as usual this year...although they didn't do much, well that is compared to last year when I almost had to plead with people to take them away!

See what I mean?
And the colour isn't grand is it?
However that is what the grand girls had to work on this year.
We took the middling sized one down south last week and the other two stayed up north to be scooped and cut into scary faces and dragons!
Once the pumpkins have been artified the flesh is salvaged and turned into delicious foods.

That's where my cook book comes into it's own.

It's hard enough actually reading the words now after sooo much use...but we manage.
Pumpkin tian and French sweet pumpkin pie.
Yum!

This is actually one from last year...just to show that it is coming down with seeds..."there will be a harvest next year"...that says. I always take the seeds and give them a good rinse under the cold tap to dislodge all of the gunge...as one of the twins would say! Then in a baking tray , sprinkle olive oil and a bit of salt and roast them in the oven until crisp and delicious.
Anyway enough of this foodiness...lets get down to the season and ooops...
...here come the scary people at the door.
Better let them in or there could be a "trick". Yes I have some sweets...some treats.

I'm making soup for lunch today from some pumpkin flesh that I roasted yesterday.
Normal recipe:-
Onion..garlic..potato..black pepper...herbs from the pot outside the kitchen door and of course the pumpkin.
Oh and maybe a spot of cream in it at the end .
[I have to confess that this was the second lot of roasted pumpkin...as I forgot about the first lot and ended up with charcoal!....some people call me "the burner"...how cruel!]
