The Leveret.

I was out with a couple of friends yesterday evening...when one of them mentioned that they had found a baby hare crouched in the front garden behind a flower pot!

Well you know how much I love hares!!
So I insisted on driving home with her and seeing this bundle of magic.

His/her...don't know which...ears were remarkably long for the smallness of the little body.

It's said that the mother hare leaves the leverets in different nests in the grass ...in the hope that at least one will survive.

So this little one was left under a bush in the families front garden. Opposite their house is a large field and they tell me that  regularly hares leap in this field!!

Wow...you're telling me that all of this time I've missed out on local hares?!!

How exciting.

Here he/she is...sorry about the quality of the pic ...too excited!!

As the garden is in a suburban area the family are bringing it in during the night to protect it from cats and dogs etc.
...and when the time comes for the mother hare to arrive to feed it..
..the little leveret seems to sense this and is very much awake and waiting for her rich milk.

This gorgeous creature will of course be put back into the big wild world very soon.
But for now the chance to see this baby with it's beautiful mottled fur...so different from a rabbit's fur...
..has made my week!!!

The Green Bike

I don't know about you ...but I find it really hard to throw stuff away!
For instance...
...this green bike...never really any good to ride ...but it looks so good just sitting there under the elder tree......
................ and getting so entwined in the ivy that it's now part of the garden!

...and then again....
...what earthly use can there be to keep the grown-up son's ancient Tonka truck....
.................for goodness sake look at the state of it!

Aw!

Well it's in bits and there it will stay until it rusts into oblivion and becomes part of the earth!!
What is rust good for in the garden?   There must be some plant that will benefit one day.

Back in the Garden...

What a winter...but at long last we are getting into the garden and trimming and protecting, and all of the other things that probably should have been done in March.
Nobody was doing any gardening in March around here!!

The frogs have spawned and the little pond at the bottom of the field is full to overflowing with it.

The potter is climbing ladders again...and very happy to be doing so.
This apple tree is a great fruiter but needed the centre opening up.
He's the man who can!

...and this year we were determined to get to the cherry tree before the wood pigeons...
Two years ago it was so prolific that I was able to make a glass "topf"  full of cherry brandy.
....my sister's German recipe.....

Last year the pigeons made it before us and we only managed to salvage a handful of cherries.
They eat the the buds ...they must be sooo sweet...before they have a chance even to start to become cherries...

Well yaahooo!!
you fat wood pigeons....got there before you this time
...not as if there isn't lots of other lovely stuff to go for...
...and by the way birds...
lay off the peas also this year!!

Wax wings at the Bay.

We took a trip up to the Bay this week. We were just about to leave the house when a twittering caught my attention. Looking up into the lovely lime tree outside the house ...were four pretty little buff coloured birds with slightly forked tails and a bit of colour on the head.
So back  down the motorway and into the summer house, I looked up my bird list by the knowledgeable Simon Barnes and there it was ....Wax Wings.....Excited.
This is the tree last autumn...

.....A giving tree whatever the season.

Obviously lots of goodies in the tree for these little fellows.

A Poem for Thursday....dVerse week 90

Tea in The Garden

Sometimes tea was taken in the garden
A starched white cloth edged with lace
Thrown over a green baize card table
A cake iced with chocolate, proud on a plate
On a fine china plate in the middle of the table
Baked to keep our young energies up.

Four hard chairs brought out from the dining room
No garden chairs for us in those days.
Hot brewed tea poured like  golden liquor
From a shiny silver pot and sloshed into china cups.
No vulgar mugs for us in the garden
But a porcelain rim made for taste and pleasure
Which we raised to our lips as the sun shone down .

Tea was  made with fragrant floating leaves
No tea bags then but a little silver sieve
That nestled in a dish and caught them in the net
Though a few floated there like a rock pool by the sea
And we supped them up like perfume ‘twixt the  teeth and the tongue.
We were not so fussy then in the days
When we were young.

It's such a long time since I posted anything for dVerse...so I hope that maybe one or two might have some memory of me aeons ago!! followed you though here and on twitter every day. Love to see what is happening in Poetryland.  Tashtoo is in charge and I'm offering her a memory of days in the garden in Belfast.....yonks ago!

The Round circle of Life...

So...this grandgirl...one of my southern ones ...is writing songs...
I love that thought...
Why?
Well because that's what I did at her age....9 years old...
..and furthermore continued to do for many years ...and more than that recorded in a London studio at the end of the 60s and early 70s......
...so what...I hear you say ?
Well the mum ...loyal daughter...said to her ...
"Do you know who else in our family wrote songs?...
...Grangee"....that's me by the way...
"shall we google her?"
(what rubbish ...it was 40 years ago!)
OOOOPS....there she is, and guess what the LP is for sale....
.....at what?!!!

 Never!
I'm stunned...I want to go searching in the boxes...you know the ones that everyone keeps under their beds...don't you?...and see if I can find some chewed-up copy somewhere!!!
I google...yes it's true.
But what's that I see?

...I've died!!!!!

Yes that's why the LP is so expensive...I can't produce any more ....I suppose!!!!
Talk about wikipedia.
Yes I did make records...they were Jazz, Soul, of their time, and lo and behold it appears that people still want them!
Well I suppose I should have realised that as I get my PRS through each year....though to be honest it wouldn't take me very far nowadays .
But it's still a nice feeling when it comes through the letterbox.

I've written to the very nice man who wrote up about my demise....what was it that Spike Milligan said?...something like ..."The news of my death has been much exaggerated"....
...or was it ..."I told you I was ill"..?

...aunt Helen would say..."So much water under the Lagan Bridges"

Dear blogging friends...you must realise how much I'm loving this!!!!
