Ceramic Sales...David slays Goliath/ NHS slays coronavirus19

The year 2002 was quite a year for us at The Potters House Penketh.
Alan's dad..Sydney Snape died.
We bought an old guest house in Morecambe 5 minutes from the beach.
We went to Spain for the first time and stayed in the beautiful apartment owned by our niece and nephew... up the hill from Marbella.
Alan made this large bowl with his typical comic aproach to some of the Bible stories.
I loved it.
I didn't want it to go.
He often stashed it on the top of a storage cupboard in the back studio.
In that way ...it wasn't going to sell.
Until today.
The buyer asked about Gath...was it local?
So the potter told the story of the small David and the great big hulking giant Goliath.
She'd never heard it before.
I think Goliath is "coronavirus 19" and David is little NHS...that defeats it.....chops of it's head!!

This year...back to Morecambe one day soon I hope.

Next year back to Spain..I hope!

A Poem for Thursday

Seeing that this Friday is the start of the Olympics here in Britain, I thought that this might be apt.
I associate sports day with the cringing agonies of knowing that I will fail ...
...and there's nothing I can do about it..
....but watch the winners win!
However I have enjoyed the run up to the games ...and if anyone has a ticket for any of the sports...have fun and don't scream so loud that you lose you voice...the potter will be doing that for you!

Sports Day

They
do not shiver
in unsightly shorts and shirts.

Nor
do they sit
dejectedly waiting for the next race.
-
Knowing
that failure
would rear it's ugly head,

as
elegant girls
and musclebound boys
romp off with the medals
once more.
 -
Cartwheels
on the beach,
polo in the sea.
 -
A splash
of waves on surf boards
and loud shouts of laughter.
-
No
this cannot be
sports day - can it?

Once again the wonderful dVerse is hosting "Open link night" week 54 so I'm hurrying along to make sure that I'm in my seat for the game to begin...yes I have a ticket!!

A Poem for Thursday

The Beach Sellers

Two weeks each year
in the sun.
Three beach cover-ups
in the "Spanish drawer".
A new look arrives.
Soft jersey,
brightly coloured,
it swathes the body.
I'm tempted.
Cuanto es?

They
walk so far
in the mid-day sun.
Straw hats
and sturdy sandals.
Heavy bags on their shoulders.
Always smiling.
"Very pretty"
"Very good price"

This is another in the series that I made while on the beach in Spain. So many characters that I've noticed over the years.
I'm linking up to dVerse open link night 51 again.
Thanks for the opportunity dVerse!

A Poem for Thursday

The Business Deal

Business on the beach.
"Buy !
 Sell !
Just a minute 'til I walk somewhere quiet.
The noise ?
Waves falling with the tide.
Carry on.
I'm back next week.
Sounds good.
Yes...
the weather is good."

He was broad , like a bull,
And his rotund stomach
Had taken many years
Of serious business lunches
...to achieve.
Of that he was proud.

I'm linking up with dVerse today on the open link night week 50.
Just back from the annual time in southern Spain, on the beach!!

Fuengirola Market!

It's market day!
Hooray!
Alan and I always start with a spanish coffee and a toasted croissante.
It costs all of 5.80 euros...that's for two of us.
Delish!
This year lovely Jean (the potter's sister] and gorgeous hubby, Rob..
joined us at the grand do.

But I had to go back the next week to see what the clothes stall was offering.
I'm hooked!
The stall in the market that has me in my best cherry-picking mode has got me again!
It used to be, "n'euro...n'euro!"
This year it was, "d'euro, d'euro!"
Three trestle tables piled up with clothes from all over the world.
"Roll up ladies and grab your hearts' desires."
Last year I was entranced with two African coats,
I flung them over my arm, to save them from the melee.

I posed wearing the blue....

and the potter kindly secumbed to my pleas to wear the green one.

( note facial expression).

This year ,
oh joy of joys...
a Japanese kimona..

I assumed that it was merely a pretty house coat...
but no,
there on the label in the back was ,
"Made in Japan.   100 per cent silk"

I often wonder who owned these garments
and how did they manage to end up in Fuengirola Market?

And when if ever will I have an occasion to wear them...
I don't get out much!!!

Well you may or may not remember the
Mad Hatter's episode last year
and there they were...
...those garments.
Though what they had to do with the Mad Hatter...
I'm not entirely sure.

Not a Great Gardener.

Considering that we live in the middle of a suburb
and have 16 neighbours around and about the place,
we have quite a bit of land...well nearly an acre.

So people think that I am a good gardener
as there are a lot of flowers and trees in the garden.

Well part of the truth is that a lot of what you see at the moment...
...was there before we came.

So the question is,
after the lemon and yellow of early spring
is it only our patch that starts to turn blue?

All of the bluebells were there already, so I've just let them multiply and shed their seeds and spread themselves about.

I've heard people say that they're a menace...they take over if you turn your back.
And also say that they aren't even English,
the Spanish have somehow infiltrated them!
Oh, that's exciting!
I love Spain.

So...then...there's another thing,
why is it that in the middle of all of this blueiness
suddenly
arrives an anarchistic
orange?

Now I like a bit of complementary colouring
with the best of them,
but I didn't plan this .
And blow me if it isn't another country getting in the act with the Iceland poppies!

Forgetmenot?
How could I ever!
You spring up in all the right places
just to be seen with the right companions.

Well I just had to compete.
So I went out to Beetham Garden Centre and got me a pile of blue and, well fairly nearly, black.

Beat that you  pesky,  pretty, pop-up everywhere beauties...

[hope they come back next year! ]
