Collage in the Morecambe house...

I studied for a BA fine art degree at The Wirral Met ...

...five years as a mature student...

...did'nt finish it, but after five years I felt I had some understanding of what it didn't mean!!

However during that time I collected some cartoons that were published each weekend in one of the papers....by Psillos...a Greek artist working in fashion and political cartoons.

The papers got filed in a folder in my studio and there they have been ..on the shelf with all the other arty stuff I've accumulated since 1999.

Until this week.
We were up at the bay house and the weather as you know was fierce...

...so no walking for us.

It only took a couple of hours and a pot of wallpaper paste and we clad an old wall outside the room at very top of the house under the eaves we call  ...
"The Club Room "

A  wall at the  top of the stairs and above it in the space made watertight by the builders last year.
...a painting of the seagulls that nest in our tall chimneys.

... the collage really brightens up the space..

...with a great smiling mouth in the middle!...

Some information about Psillos....

Demetrios Psillos has worked for John Galliano at the start of his career, he moved into Illustration and found success in New York with clients including Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, The New Yorker, Wallpaper and The New York Times. On returning to the UK, he continued working as an illustrator for The Times and Vogue. His successful illustrations for Nigella Lawson’s Food & Lifestyle columns led Demetrios to create the animated title sequences to the multi-award winning ‘Nigella Bites’ series. Love his gorgeous vivid colours! www.demetriospsillos.com

I'm planning another wall...I have lots of cartoons left still...but the clay man doesn't know that yet.
Keeping it as a surprise for his March birthday!!

Monday, February 7

Just one day in February.

On Friday we drove up the M6 to the old house in West End Morecambe and popped the heating on to warm it up.

...then  switched on the electric blanket to air the bed...

...and off to Arnside in the wind with big skies and rainbows over the Bay.

A train goes off to Whitehaven again.
It looks like a toy train as it trundles over the bridge on it's way up the west coast of Cumbria.
We sit and stare and promise...we'll do that trip this year.

...my mum loved seagulls...her favourite book was " Jonathan Livingston Seagull"...
Rosie bought it for her.
...we used to watch them from the old caravan at Ballyferris...fighting the winds and soaring over the wild seas.

...we were just in time to catch the "bore" as it powered it's way up the Kent ...roaring like a tractor...

...sudden downpours...
...caused many rainbows...I love a rainbow...it tells me " All will be well"...
(Julian of Norwich...thankyou..)

...then back to the old house and fish and chips with the blessed son...who now lives on The Bay.
A big fire in the grate and rugs around the knees and we talk of this and that ...

and are thankful.

Ceramic Sales...David slays Goliath/ NHS slays coronavirus19

The year 2002 was quite a year for us at The Potters House Penketh.
Alan's dad..Sydney Snape died.
We bought an old guest house in Morecambe 5 minutes from the beach.
We went to Spain for the first time and stayed in the beautiful apartment owned by our niece and nephew... up the hill from Marbella.
Alan made this large bowl with his typical comic aproach to some of the Bible stories.
I loved it.
I didn't want it to go.
He often stashed it on the top of a storage cupboard in the back studio.
In that way ...it wasn't going to sell.
Until today.
The buyer asked about Gath...was it local?
So the potter told the story of the small David and the great big hulking giant Goliath.
She'd never heard it before.
I think Goliath is "coronavirus 19" and David is little NHS...that defeats it.....chops of it's head!!

This year...back to Morecambe one day soon I hope.

Next year back to Spain..I hope!

Snape Lane

When I told my mother I was getting married to the man who is now my husband....she tutted and commented that it was a real shame to lose my surname for the name...Snape.

She said it had no poetic ring to it.

I kept my Ulster name for a while and double barrelled with Snape.
Geraldine McClelland- Snape
What a mouthful.
I soon got rid of that.

Then I found out that a snape is an old english word having two meanings.

snape

v.
also sneap, "to be hard upon, rebuke, revile, snub," early 14c., from OldNorse sneypa "to outrage, dishonor, disgrace," probably related to similar-sounding words meaning "cut" (cf. snip (v.)). Verbal meaning "bevel theend (of a timber) to fit an inclined surface" is of uncertain origin orconnection. Snaiping "rebuking, reproaching, reviling" is attested fromearly 14c.

Surname meaning for "Snape"

English and Scottish: habitational name from any of various places in England and southern Scotland, for example in North Yorkshire near Bedale, in the Lowlands near Biggar, and in Suffolk, so named with Old English snæp ‘area of boggy land’. In Sussex the dialect term snape is still used of boggy, uncultivable land.
More than that I started going to Suffolk and regularly visited the village of Snape and The Maltings...where Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears set up the Snape Maltings Music Festival.
Wow....that made Snape even more attractive.
It didn't end there... oh no.
Next thing I discovered was that the last queen of Henry VIII...Catherine Parr.. lived and married second time to John Neville 3rd baron Latimer...in Snape Castle in Yorkshire....well they say that's God's own county I hear.
I'm only an Irish woman so I'm believing what I'm told you understand.
Now...the potter and I have a little retreat up on the bay...that's Morecambe Bay...The Bay.
We started exploring the limestone bulge that surrounds so much of that lovely part of England.
Carnforth...Silverdale...Arnside...Milnthorpe
And one day I shout at the potter.."Look...Snape Lane ...lets go up there."

I've started taking pics of this magic little secret lane regularly as the seasons change.
We went on Sunday and these are the up to date snaps of it.
No white lines here.
Very little traffic...and how I love the way the fields have been given appropriate titles.

...that's me and my shadow...Gerry Snape

...we stop at the first bend in the road to see the view over the countryside...

...the hedges have been given their autumn coiffure...ancient hedges protecting even older stone walls...I think of Robert Frost's wonderful poem about dividing and protecting neighbours...

...lines...marks...pattern...chiaroscuro...

...this was our discovery on Sunday...the naming of fields...my dad often talked about the names of the fields at his home farm in Armagh..it meant so much to him and he would recite them to us in our city lives...

...this one is "The Pond Field"...where sheep graze on the gentle hill that dips down into it...
...and Snape Top Field...at the top...

..up into the top of the lane and the road is bounded by high stone walls covered in ancient roots of
ivy....I go to see what they have twisted around this year and gather the dead branches from the fallen leaves underneath...

...looking west to the top of the hill under the yellowing canopy of late autumn trees....

...looking east back to where we have come...

...light and shade and a view through to old established trees...

...and sunlight filters through to light the ivy casting many blue shadows on the stones...

I can't write any poetry yet about this lane.
It's almost too much to think that way yet.
And I'm not giving you directions to get to it...it's secret.
Maybe one day.

Piel Island...A Poem for Thursday

I'd been wanting to go to this island for a few years. The last time we made the trip the weather was windy and the Ferryman refused to take us across...who can blame him..the currents alone are treacherous between the mainland...Barrow-in-Furness and the island. This is no ordinary place..it has it's own King and Throne and also  Piel Castle. The Abbott of Furness Abbey owned the rights to all the takings from the sea going craft coming from both Ireland and The Isle-of-Man. It's not touristy and apart from some terraced houses the pub is the only occupied building.
We spent a day just wandering the edge and listening to the skylarks which are everywhere on this little piece of land.

Piel Island

The skylarks are rising
Drawing me far away
From the nest low in the
Tufts of maran grass that
Grow out of the mussel beach.
I stop to watch their ascent
And listen as the lark
Song joins the soft keening
Of an April wind 'til
Wind takes over and
The bird is lost to my eyes.
