Prom Art at Grange over Sands....Sunday.

Another year gone and April has come around so quickly.
Prom art on Sunday.....such a great place to see northern English artists and crafts folk.
We will be there ...unless the rains start again.
I'm looking forward to seeing old friends and making new aquaintances.
The potter has rather less to show this month due to the winter blip!!
But we go and set up and watch the world go by...especially the dog walkers!!
It's a time to dream as well as the view is stunning.

The car is packed and bulging at the seams...

I've been food shopping to stock up for a picnic...just to make a special day of it.

I'll let you know how it goes!!

it's true...summer is over

We're back from the wet north ...and no Grange Prom Art yesterday.

This year has been the worst for the kind of weather that causes openings to be cancelled...
...although we masterfully kept going last month...even though the rain came in bursts...we simply gathered the paintings  up and waited 'til it stopped.
However on Sunday we met up with the buyer for the tankard and she was really happy with the outcome!
So...can't win 'em all but won one today!

The trees up by Grange are already tinted with reds and golds and looking like fire blazing even in the downpours that have flooded the fields.

I have some seasonal indicators here at the Pottery... telling me that  summer is over...
.

...the virginia creeper outside the window of the lounge.... spreading downwards like a morrocan veil coyly hiding the worst of winter from our summer blinded eyes.

...and of course ...the delicate webs of autumn interlaced with trembling raindrops and turned to crystal as the sun breaks through for a brief moment....

joint work

We were asked to make a tankard...and paint the landscape that can be viewed from the Promenade at Grange-over-Sands....oh and then put a sinking man in the bottom of the pot!...well it's all to do with the treacherous sands on Morecambe Bay.

The potter made the tankard and I painted the landscape with slip and glazes......we're quite pleased with the results....hope the order is acceptable!

"not waving...but drowning"...(with apologies to stevie smith!)

Sunday at Grange-over-Sands

It was Prom Art again on Sunday ...gosh it comes around so fast I can hardly get my breath.
Well... we love Grange and The Prom Art...but not the rain that stopped the people from promenading with their families and dogs!
So it was a matter of covering up the stall and in the heavy showers hauling in the paintings while the ceramics could look after themselves!

  The stall looked good..
...even in all the wetness!

.and Robert....chief organiser, if you don't count his gorgeous wife !...
was to be seen as usual, walking up and down the prom encouraging us.

yellow hat glowing... so we would know that he was around.

We had some new tiles on the stall...
               hares......!

yes... I know you all realise I'm besotted with them at the moment...

                       but there you go!

...you must blame Derek Jarman's cottage for it all!

There's always a bonus at Grange.....
...the bay was glorious with massive rain clouds  hanging over the hills around Arnside...
I just had to take loads of pics...

Then just to be seen away in the distance at the oppposite side of the bay...
...leading his people like a modern day Moses across the treacherous sands....
the Queen's Guide, Cedric Robinson

I listened to two little girls discussing the sands...
..." If you fall in there the sand will swallow you up"...
...unbelieving look..."Really?"

Well it could have been a Dr. Who moment!

Cedric Robinson

Saturday was the last of the Prom Art Shows held in Grange-over-Sands.
I was feeling  lousy!
I had done my back in and I just didn't want to know anybody or anything!
So as standing and walking was less painful than sitting...I upped sticks and went off on a long walk.

West along the north edge of the Bay where it meets the River Kent.

Past salt marshes where sheep were grazing.

Past the railway line that takes you from Carnforth up into the Lakes.

Through green tunnels.

Past ancient north country walls, sprouting greenery never to be seen in the city.

I spied an old farmhouse and took a pic. Smoke poured out of the ancient chimneys and the white walls shone in the autumn sun.

Under the railway bridge the path took me right along side of this house.
Outside the gate a stand held copies of the book...
....Cedric Robinson...The Queen's Guide for Morecambe Bay.
I might buy a copy I thought and walked on.
Then changed my mind and went back to have another look....

...and there was the man himself.

Most of us in this country know about the dangers of Morecambe Bay.
The tides go out and leave 100 sq. miles of sand uncovered.
But as the tide turns it speeds in at about 30 miles an hour...faster than a man can run.
Also the sand is sinking sand. If you linger too long you may be trapped and unable to extricate your feet from the sucking down terror.
Recently the worst tragedy was the Chinese cocklers who perished when they were caught in the dark by the flood tide.
A guide is needed to weave a path through the sands and people regularly are taken out by the guides across the Bay.
Cedric very kindly allowed me to take a photo.  Then in my excitement...I forgot to buy the book!

I shall. I'll leave it on the coffee table up at the house on the Bay.
I haven't walked the Bay myself yet.
One day ...I hope!

Ceramic Pebble Pots

Five pebbles pots ready to be taken to Prom Art at Grange-over-Sands on Sunday 25th September.
We had people asking for these last month....let's hope that they are there this time!

Prom Art in July 2011

Another great day at Grange-over-Sands yesterday. I was a bit worried about the weather playing up...either too hot and nowhere to hide...or rainy and not worth putting the paintings out.
Oh dear you can't please some people!
But it was perfect. Warm breeze and clouds covering the worst of the sun's heat.....well we are talking northern here.

                                        Robert...

of the yellow sweatshirt fame!...was pleased with the turnout.
He runs the show...(and I think maybe his sweatshirt is pink now?)

A hundred and ten artists this time.

And the quality of the art gets better and better.
We had a good day business-wise and on top of that met some lovely folks and had a yummy picnic.
What more could one ask for?
That's maybe stretching it a tad! Don't ask me for a list.

Anyway these ceramic poppy heads sold out...

Penguins flew off the table...metaphorically speaking...

One lovely lady came to buy her 4th...
...what can she be doing with them?

And Kate the granddaughter, sold one of these...much to her financial delight!

But these little "babes" were not there as they are even now being packed up for the journey south to
The Snape Maltings Gallery in Suffolk tomorrow.

....and all in a row....

They should feel at home down there!
