roses
What with the wet summer and now the even wetter autumn...I decided to save the last of the summer roses...before they ended up rain-bedragged and mushy!
Having said that...we both had a delicious fig from the "brown turkey fig tree" today...delicious...
...who says we don't live well up here in "dane land"...(vikings last night on BBC)!!!

Entering the Jungle.
It rained most of June...though we were lucky enough to be in Spain for some of that...
and then it has rained most of July...
oh and of course we couldn't garden when we were in Spain...
and so now...
...we have a jungle in the back field part of our land!
This is the result of two hours on a meter square bit of the herb garden.
Now I know that in some ways this looks rather attractive...lush and green...and to those followers living at the moment in a dried up and dusty wilderness...I'm sorry if you think I'm moaning.
The slugs and snails are so big that they have smaller slugs and snails doing the housework for them.
I have even heard that they have come all the way from Spain after hearing how good the takings were around our parts!
The Times today had a good article on how to get them ready for the pot ...so watch out you slimey things!
Anyway...I'm knee deep in the green everyday...skipping the showers and hauling the soggy undergrowth up to the old wheelbarrow.
But...the other thing is that some of the plants have grown to twice their size and I suspect that they have been coupling with some triffids while we were lounging on beach beds in the sand.
These are the cardoons last year...
probably around 4 feet high...so... easy to see the tops of the flowers...
...this year... I can't see the tops of anything!
They are at least 8 feet high.
Ahh! looks like it might rain in a minute...maybe there's a golden goose at the top of these and it will lay me a golden egg....stranger things and all that!

The Francis House Childrens' Hospice Bash!
Well what a day!
The weather changed overnight from monsoon...

.... to mediterranean.

...only joking!
Friday was all hands on deck

as the tents arrived to be raised in place.

this one close to an electric supply for the musicians...

The goods were brought in for the various stalls ...

and the toys...is that what they are?...
eventually on Saturday found a relaxing spot in the sun !

Cakes came in "bucketfuls"...well no, really in tins... oh yes and a package of painted cookies for the pop up afternoon teas from the gloroius Amelies House and Neviepie Cakes!
BUT.... it rained all day Fiday, and got increasingly heavier until by midnight I hid my head under the bedclothes and informed the potter...that I would never allow myself to be in this situation again....
...he mumbled and fell asleep...and amazingly, so did I.
....to awake to glorious sunshine..
What's that song again?..
..oh yes....
I prepared the three areas for the pop-up afternoon teas.

Helpers arrived to set up stalls....

Issy had thought long and hard about her table...guessing the teddy's name was fun!
...others lugged heavy boxes of books...

...kept the kitchen organised...

..printed up notices...
...techie son on the job!...

...manned the cake and drinks servery...

...and set up to give us some entertainment from the music tent.

The four friends were everywhere!

At two o'clock the gate was starting to get busy...
....and we were off on the 2011 garden party bash!
