Woody Guthrie...The Man in the Sand.

Go down to the water where the oil floats by
And drop your head down and cry
And write with your finger in the sand
And mail it out with the tide
Mail it out with the high and the low
And watch the marks on the sand
And listen to the fog on the homeless waves
And feel the salt sea in your hand.

Smell the sea wind - taste on your lips
That foam that rolls over my lost ships
And write your letter once more in the sand
Where the breaker dips and the undertow slips
And when nobody's looking - kiss your hand
And touch to the nose of your man in the sand
And then lay down with your head on his chest
And be nice to your man in the sand.

I'm just a sucker for the sea and poetry... and it's got them together in bundles here..

Visiting Humphrey II

The landscape stretching out from the Head is quite amazing.

A seemingly endless vista of sand and sky...
... soothing the mind and freeing the soul.

Large gullies form and reform with successive tides.

...and strange unearthly formations are constantly being brought into being.

Grassy areas grow and prosper...only to be decimated by storms that smash them and reform them elsewhere.

These are the Eastern Lakes in the distance...past the salt marsh sheep grazing on the herbal plain...

...and the mouth of the Bay to the south...stretching out across 100 square miles of emptiness...

...to the west the blue mountains of the Lake district ...

...and to the north ...the plain left behind when the ice receded.

We climbed up on to the top of Humphrey... and the wind though hardly noticable on the flat sands, gusted and pushed against us.

...the potter thought that he would give the wind a hand in the sculpting of this ancient thorn tree!

...you can only smile...

A Poem for Thursday.

Come wind
Come blow
Come scatter leaf.
Come stroke my skin
Come touch my soul.

Bring ocean salt
Bring desert sand.
Bring Indus' spice,
Bring scent of rose.

Then fill the garden with your voice.
Then sing out wind
Sing autumn's song.
Too soon the sunning
Will be gone.
